日本早在十九世紀末期由英、法、美等國家引進管樂，並於廿世紀初期推廣至各個中學。第二次世界大戰之前，雖然當時大多數學校的硬體設備 ( 樂器 ) 都不是很完善，但全日本就擁有超過 1300 支的學校樂隊 ( School Band ) 。

第二次世界大戰之後，日本第一個職業管樂團 - 大阪市管樂團 ( Osaka City Concert Band ) 成立，但日本正值戰後的恢復期，雖然陸續有人將歐美的教材、樂器引進日本，但大多數的樂團仍然不容易找到合適的資源。直到 60 年代， Ongaku No Tomo Sha ( 目前日本規模最大的樂譜出版公司 ) 成立，情況才逐漸改善。加上自 70 年代開始，管樂比賽大量採用國人作品，鼓勵日本人致力於管樂曲的創作與發揚，成就目前歐、美、日本三大主流的管樂世界。

為推廣管樂，並讓更多人了解日本管樂的發展情況，日本 Brain Music 於 1998 年開始製作 KYO-EN 系列錄音，每年推出一款專門收集日本作曲家及韓裔作曲家之管樂佳作選集，由日本知名管樂團擔任演出，極具收藏價值。
