伯恩斯坦，美國著名指揮家、作曲家、鋼琴家及教育家。

1918 年生於美國麻薩諸塞州羅倫斯，為美籍猶太裔。童年即展露音樂上的天份，於 13 歲時創作一首鋼琴協奏曲。1935 進入哈佛大學，追隨皮斯頓 ( Walter Piston ) 、希爾 ( Edward Burlingame-Hill ) 及梅利特 ( A. Tillman Merritt ) 學習作曲及指揮。 1939 年進入柯蒂斯音樂院，追隨萊納 (Fritz Reiner ) 學習指揮，並向湯普森 ( Randall Thompson ) 學習管絃樂配器。 1940 年曾向庫塞維茲基 ( Serge Koussevitzky ) 學習指揮。

1943 年伯恩斯坦出任紐約愛樂副指揮，頂替因病無法登台演出的華爾特 ( Bruno Walter ) ，結果大獲成功而一舉成名。 1958 年更榮膺紐約愛樂的音樂總監之職， 1969 年去職時更獲得「桂冠指揮」的榮銜。 1990 年，伯恩斯坦病逝於紐約市。

伯恩斯坦是一位多才多藝的音樂家，他在作曲上取得了不小的成就。其著名作品包括了第一號交響曲「耶利米」 ( Jeremiah ) 、第二號交響曲「焦慮的年代」 ( The Age of Anxiety ) 、第三號交響曲「凱迪希」 ( Kaddish ) 、音樂喜劇「憨第德」 ( Candide ) ，以及音樂劇「西城故事」 ( West Side Story ) 等。

這張於 2006 年下旬由 WWM 發行，比利時皇家禁衛軍管樂團前指揮 Norbert Nozy 與荷蘭皇家陸軍樂隊灌錄的作品輯，共收錄伯恩斯坦為俄國知名大提琴家與指揮家羅斯卓波維契 ( Mstislav Rostropovich ) 所創作的「 Slava! 」、根據「西城故事」劇樂重新編寫的交響組曲管樂改編版本及為獨奏豎笛與爵士樂團所創作的「 Prelude, Fugue and Riffs 」等五部具代表性的管樂（改編）作品。

其中，由 Clare Grundman 改編自伯恩斯坦受美國波士頓管弦樂團委託創作的《嬉遊曲》 ( Divertimento ) ，更是管樂錄音文獻中罕見的作品，值得一聽。
